Malta Airport Guide

Useful Information and Tips about Malta International Airport

General Airport Information

Malta International Airport is the only airport in Malta, handling all the international flights from and to the Republic of Malta. It lies just 8km/4.9 miles from Valletta, the capital, in the central area of the island of Malta. Even though it is a relatively small aviation hub, it has received many awards, being regarded as one of the most passenger-friendly airports in Europe. It houses more than 22 airlines and provides all the anticipated from the “Best European Airport in its category”  services and amenities.

Malta Airport has only one terminal building that houses both Departures and Arrivals. Even though the MLA terminal isn’t a vast building, it offers a surprisingly large number of retail stores as well as houses many eateries. Overall, it is considered a modern, clean, and fresh terminal.

Malta International Airport doesn’t house any accommodation options inside the terminal building. However, there are several hotels near Malta Airport for all budgets and preferences. On the other hand, the island of Malta is small, and the distances are short. Thus, you can book a room in a hotel lying in one of the most popular island destinations and still be a 20-minute ride from MLA Airport.

There are various parking facilities scattered around the Malta airport complex. Verily, MLA houses two covered parking lots and four open-air car parks, all located within a short distance from the terminal’s doors, while designated zones right outside the terminal serve pick-ups and drop-offs. All the car parks are monitored and operate on a 24-hour basis.

Layover at the Airport

Do you have a layover at Malta Airport? Depending on its duration, you can make the most of your free time. Thus, during a short layover, you can exploit the MLA airport’s provided services and amenities, whereas long layovers are the perfect excuse to leave the airport and go visit one or more of the island sites and destinations.
